2020 Christmas Wish Update

Senior Wish is planning to meet the challenges of providing gifts and reaching out to our seniors.

Following discussions with caregivers and seniors we realize that the Senior Wish Association is challenged this year to provide gifts for the lonely and isolated seniors in our community.

It has been our tradition to provide items on a seniors Christmas Wish list but this is not possible this year due to restrictions and lack of space at seniors’ residences, plus the challenges of COVID 19, etc. One of our challenges is that we cannot have drop boxes for gift items throughout the community this year. We are planning to make sure that we will touch the lives of lonely seniors this Christmas and we need you to help us make a difference.

Reaching out to seniors in our community is our first step, providing personally hand-crafted Christmas Cards with messages inside to the seniors to reassure them that they are not being forgotten and that we care about them, sending our love and support.

We are looking for volunteers to help us craft professional cards and messages and will need over 1800 cards.

We have also received many requests to provide a shopping service and/or deliver items to seniors’ homes. If you could help us with this we would like to hear from you – It could be as simple as a senior wanting something from a local store that carries their favourite treat.

Our next steps will be determined by restrictions and how we respond to the opportunities to reach our seniors.

We are also accepting financial donations that will assist us in providing floral arrangements, hand lotion, and other treats for our recipients, plus the hard working teams at our local seniors homes and centres.

You may never meet the senior that has received your kindness but you can be sure they will never forget how you made them feel!

Last year over 4,000 seniors in the Barrie area benefitted from Senior Wish.

2019 Christmas Wish  Wrap Up Night:

Christmas is a particularly challenging time if you don’t have any loved ones to celebrate with.  Do you know we have Seniors who spend Christmas all alone?  Do you know there are Seniors in retirement and long term care homes who have never had a visitor, never had a Christmas present or a birthday present?  Our Christmas Stocking program is currently underway.

Donations of new pyjamas, nightgowns, slippers, housecoats, cuddly stuffed animals, playing cards/games, music cd's or items such as deodorant, hand lotion, face cream, soap, small boxes of cookies or candies or anything you would find in a Christmas stocking are gratefully accepted as are cash donations towards this project.  Some families and participants are ‘adopting’ one or two special Seniors and making up a complete package for the Senior.

A special part of the Christmas Wish program is our final Wrap Up Night - this is where volunteers (all welcome, all ages!) assemble gifts from the generous donations from our community, this year we predict we will have well over 1,000+ seniors who will be recipients of gifts!  Check our Facebook page for dates

This year our community includes Barrie, Stayner & Clearview, Sandy Cove, Innisfil, Bradford, (most of Simcoe County & some areas beyond!), Oro-Medonte, Orillia and Gravenhurst/Muskoka.

We've placed our donation boxes out in the Community for this year's Senior Christmas Wish - visit our Facebook page for a complete up to date list.

Christmas Tour of Lights - Date to be announced

This special time of year also brings our Annual Tour of Christmas Lights in Barrie:  Buses of Seniors tour the great city of Barrie to view the spectacular Christmas light displays - their final stop of the evening is at the beautiful Barrie waterfront, where our Seniors are greeted by a team providing warm drinks and a treat, along with special singers, and a very special jolly guest!

This event is fully funded by the Barrie-Huronia Rotary Club and Senior Wish Association.  We thank all the volunteers and everyone involved for your generosity, with a special thanks to Pat Imrie for heading up this project every year.

Barrie residents and businesses are reminded to turn their Christmas lights on at 6:00 pm for the Tour of Lights ~ Let's give our Seniors a light show like no other!
